You Are On Our Side

I interrupt this week's scheduled poem of the week to bring you a song by Bethany Dillon. Bethany is rather young, but she has extraordinary insight which finds its way into her songs. I love her because she doesn't write the typical Christian pop songs but writes songs that are challenging and soul-stirring, songs that often speak of a Christianity that is not easy but is absolutely vital. Her newest album is called Waking Up, and I'm posting the lyrics to the album's last song, "You Are On Our Side." (I haven't found an audio version yet, but if I do I'll post it as well.)

The orphan clings to Your hand
Singing the song of how he was found
The widow rejoices
For her oppressors are silenced now

You sit at the table with the wounded and the poor
You laugh and share stories with the thief and the whore
When You could just be silent and leave us here to die
Still, You sent Your Son for us
You are on our side

The runaway falls at Your feet
You are what he has searched for
The rich man is broken
When he stands beneath a sky full of stars

You sit at the table with the wounded and the poor
You laugh and share stories with the thief and the whore
When You could just be silent and leave us here to die
Still, You sent Your Son for us
You are on our side

Still, You sent Your Son for us
You are on our side
