Weekly Poll

In the history of polls, from the steveipedia, on to stephenanderin, I don't believe there's been this close and spread out of a vote. Elf and Wonderful Life tied for the lead with 2 votes a piece. The Grinch and Best Christmas Pageant Ever each got 2 mentions as write ins. The only movie that didn't get a vote was Miracle on 34th Street. Very interesting and inconclusive results.

On to this week's inquiry. My question to you: Should you tip when you eat at Sonic? On one hand, they bring your food to you. On the other hand, it's not a "sit down" restaurant and they don't refill your drinks. Let me know your thoughts, as always, in the comment section.

Happy voting.

Um, I've never been to Sonic. I know what it is though, and I like the commericials.

I suppose a small tip would be a nice thing, although not required. You might make the person's day, just by being kind. But no, I don't think it's required. It's a fast food joint. Doesn't count.

The reason this poll is up here is because this weekend Stephen and I were with my parents and stopped at Sonic. My mom flipped out when she found out that neither I nor Stephen tip. Basically, she was horrified, and we insisted that tips are not required. I think especially since now you can pay with a debit or credit card and there's no tip line, that it's clear that tips aren't required. And if we tip people at Sonic for bringing us our food, should we also tip people at Backyard Burger for doing the same? I don't think so.

Also, the serves at Sonic make at least minimum wage, if not more, from what I've read, whereas wait staff in restaurants really do rely mainly on tips to make money.

As Erin said, my vote is no. Reasoning?

1. It's a fast food restaurant. There are no other fast food restaurants where you tip.

2. They don't return to fill your drinks, or offer dessert, or ask how your food is. They simply bring it out, and walk back.

3. Even if the order is right, everything is fresh and tasty, why should they get a tip for doing something they're supposed to do anyway?

I don't believe I've ever seen anyone over the age of 17 working at Sonic, so I don't think we're talking about people's livelihoods here. Just high schoolers trying to make an extra buck.

Ok, so I had a friend work at Sonic one time. She said that customers were supposed to tip bc they did make less than minimum wage. So now if it is a small order, I tell them to keep the change and if it is a larger order I give a normal tip. However, I agree with you both that they don't really deserve the tip in the first place!
